My Story

Music Shaped My Life

My very first memories are of singing with my mother. She would teach me folk songs, and hymns. I remember singing the melody while she sang harmony. She taught me how to stay on the melody without singing her part. That is a beautiful memory that I have carried throughout my life. My mother would take me to visit my Great Aunt, who had a  piano. When I tried to play it, I found that I was able to pick out melodies. I had an intense love for music at an early age.

I started singing in the Chorus in elementary school. I also started piano lessons when I was ten years old. One amazing thing about music was that it gave me a voice to express myself. I could express emotions on the piano that I couldn't express by speaking. When I played the piano, I could escape into my own world. It helped soothe my emotions.  In middle school, I joined the band. I had always been shy. Band helped me to come out of my shell because I made friends. It taught me discipline and helped me learn the importance of working as a team to create music. I cherish those memories.

I would like to use my experience to help students experience the healing elements of music.
